Hamburg in a nutshell
- A varied city tour through the harbour city
On this tour with underground and ferry ride, we show you the heart of the city with the Inner Alster Lake, Neuer Wall, the town hall, the stock exchange and the typical “Kontorhäuser“: the development of the harbour city into a metropolis. We will cover, among other things, the Great Fire, the cholera epidemic and the demolition of the infamous Gängeviertel neighbourhood.
We then take the underground to the historic Deichstraße with the merchants' houses on the canal and visit the famous Speicherstadt, where Hamburg's merchants have been storing valuable goods from all over the world for over a hundred years. Right next to it, one of Europe's largest construction projects, Hafencity, a new district on former harbour land, is being built. Here we can also see the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
The tour continues with a short trip by ferry to the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken, where we also see the Old Elbe Tunnel, which was an important route to work for the dockers.
At the end of the city tour, we will visit the famous entertainment and residential district of St. Pauli with Davidstraße and the Reeperbahn.
This tour is also possible without St. Pauli: instead, we descend into the Old Elbe Tunnel, and take the car lift back up again (duration: approx. 2 ¼ hours).
