Off we go!
– Walking tour across the city centre
On this city walk, we show you the heart and diversity of the city: the Inner Alster Lake, the magnificent town hall with the Cholera Fountain, the stock exchange, typical “Kontorhäuser“, the ruins of St. Nikolai Church, the historic Deichstraße with the old merchants' houses on the canal, the famous Speicherstadt and the modern Hafencity, which is being built on former harbour land. We conclude the tour with a view of the iconic Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
Along the way, we talk about devastating disasters such as the Great Fire and the cholera epidemic, the demolition of the infamous Gängeviertel neighbourhood and the destruction caused in World War II. On our way we explore questions like: why are there hardly any flats left in the city centre? And why are there no old houses to be seen in the Old Town? Why is not much going on at 11 a.m. and why would nothing work in Hamburg without the underground. The tour explores Hamburg's rise to a metropolis.
