Hamburg’s waterfront

- Warehouses, docks, container ships

This tour on foot and by ferry starts at the traditional Deichstraße with its merchants' houses on the canal, where you can still see how goods were handled in the old Hamburg. We continue to the famous warehouses of the Speicherstadt and to the Hafencity, the large new district directly on the Elbe River with the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.

On a ferry trip down the river, we see the floating docks of Blohm & Voss, the fish auction hall at the Altona Fish Market and the newly developed Elbe riverbank on former harbour grounds. We get off the boat in Övelgönne. Here we show the small so called “pilot houses“ and the Elbe beach and talk about the container terminals on the other side of the Elbe. The tour shows the development of the port of Hamburg into one of the largest container ports in Europe.

For vocational school classes, we offer a version of this city tour that focuses on logistics and globalisation.
